| Many buildings are built on what used to be prime agricultural land. Verdant land has been replaced by sterile, heat-reflecting, water-shedding surfaces requiring insulation against solar heat gain instead of welcoming the sun's productive energy.Water once absorbed by the land to nourish plants now requires drainage systems and water treatment plants to process the excess storm runoff.Meanwhile our so-called Super Markets sell produce grown half-way around the globe and shipped to us by petroleum-guzzling tankers. Why not work towards eliminating the long-distance shipping of essential produce by growing it locally, while reducing the energy requirements of all these buildings we occupy.Sounds like a win-win to me. |
